Today I will present to you, Kylo Ren by S.H.Figuarts. (for the Black Series version click here.)
This time, not being my first figure of the line, I sort of knew what to expect from the brand. amazing poseability, great sculpt and an outstanding figure on its own. Let’s get more in depth.
This time, Kylo Ren is a premade figure with some of the most quality there is available for 6 inch figures without getting overkill in price.
Usually a figure will cost you about 50 dollars or euros at release, BUT be aware, once the figure is released it increases in price quite fast. What was supposed to be 50 rapidly changes to 80 or even higher, making you think twice weather you buy the figure or not.
I just had to get Kylo Ren and for me he ranged about 60 euros, so that was pretty fine.
This figure comes with a lot of extra accessories. He comes with his crossguard lightsaber, two extra hilts, one with a peg and one without.
He also has a pair of Force use hands, a pair of more relexed kind of hands, a pair of lightsaber-holding hands and a pair of fisted hands. All those hands make it incredible to pose him.
It is also possible to remove his head, or break him up in two to remove the hood, scarf and skirt.
However, I don’t like to “break him in two” to remove the skirts simply because his torso joint is already pretty loose and I don’t want it to pop of when you simply pick it up.
Kylo Ren looks simply unbelievable. The different finishes of black used throughout the whole figure really ad a lot of depth. All of the painting details also look very crisp.
The translucent lightsaber effect parts look very amazing as well, unlike the Hasbro Black Series unique take on the lightsaber.
Overall the sculpt is done nicely as well which really makes the figure believable.
The only major point of lacking might be the hood. It looks like it’s slightly hovering over his head. In some poses it looks worse than others. Also his skirt pieces are a bit of a let down when it comes to putting him in very dynamic poses.
They are made of a softer more pliable material, but just not pliable enough when it comes to putting your leg completely forward.
Kylo Ren has a high range of motion. It is slightly you can’t benefit of all of it without retracting of the overall look. Very dynamic poses simply don’t work as well on this guy as compared to, for example, a Stormtrooper, that has no skirt pieces that could ruin the dynamic pose you put him in.
but his arms, that do not suffer really of any plastic cloth pieces have an enormous range of motion. The figure also has a unique sculpt to cover up most of the joint which works pretty good.
Let’s just say, the figure is amazing, but definitely has its flaws. Slightly unfortunate, but I can deal with it. I’m okay with the flaws and might replace the Black Series on the main shelf.
I have also seen some people change out the cloth piece of the Black Series figure with the plastic bits from the S.H.Figuarts version. But then again, I’m not very happy with that cloth looking hood as well.
Anyway, we’ll see what the future brings, but S.H.Figuarts really nailed the character in my opinion.
I give Kylo a 8/10
- visually stunning
- great range of movement
- great overall 6 inch figure
- slightly off cloth pieces
